The Birth and Evolution of Davao City Bankers Association

Inception and Formation

The origins of the Davao City Bankers Association Inc. (DCBAI) can be traced back to the pivotal year of 1968. Emerging from a collective vision, a group of young and dynamic professional managers hailing from seventeen private commercial banks in Davao City came together to establish what was then known as the Davao Commercial Bankers Association. Their purpose was twofold: to foster camaraderie among banking professionals and to address pressing issues that were impacting commercial banks. These issues ranged from interpreting Central Bank policies to the meticulous handling of mutilated bills. The association also served as a forum to uncover and confront irregularities, thus enhancing the overall exchange of vital information. The platform of the association facilitated a harmonious and symbiotic relationship amongst member banks through regular interactions.

Key Figures and Milestones

A consortium of influential bank executives spearheaded the foundation of the Association of Commercial Banks. These prominent figures, all actively participating in the Central Bank Clearing system, included luminaries such as Ramon Lopez of BPI, Fernando Maramag of TPBC, Onofre Consolacion III of RCBC, and many more. The inaugural chapter presidency was entrusted to Ramon M. Lopez, marking the beginning of a series of monthly meetings and yearly elections that became the heartbeat of the organization.

Navigating Through the Years

A decade later, during the tenure of Past President Reynaldo Reyes, significant strides were taken. Notably, the introduction of a sports Olympics event, creatively themed around popular soft drink brands, ignited camaraderie among members. Additionally, a scholarship fund for deserving students was established, laying the groundwork for DCBAI's commitment to fostering education. This era coincided with the pre-EDSA Revolution period, characterized by intermittent banking operations and closures.

Under the guidance of Past President Robert Uy, collaboration with Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. led to a groundbreaking musical concert, raising funds for scholars. Past President Diomedes Lim's term was marked by challenges like attempted coups, unscheduled bank holidays, and cash shortages during flight cancellations. Yet, the association's resilience shone through as meetings were conducted at the Central Bank to strategize contingencies.

Evolution and Impact

Past President Wilhelmino Mendoza's tenure marked an evolution as Development and Savings Banks were welcomed as Associate members, albeit without voting rights. The historic election of the first female president, Malou Ong, in 1991 showcased the association's inclusivity and commitment to gender equality. During her term, the association initiated sponsorship programs for college students.

Under Past President Apollo Alquiza's leadership in 1993, the DCBAI reached a milestone with a grand Banker's Night event that included a Mini Olympics, song and dance contests, and the transition of Central Bank to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

During Past President Teresita Javellana's term in 1995, the association achieved formal registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission, securing a Tax Identification Number. The prevalent kidnapping threat led to alternate venues for meetings, ensuring safety.

Resilience and Progress

The transition of leadership from Salvador Liong to Maja Oppus in 1997 signified a dynamic shift, while Past President Al Lapined's term in 1998 navigated the banking sector through the tumultuous Asian Financial Crisis, amplifying the association's role as a voice in crucial discussions.

Under the stewardship of Past President Banny Olaer in 2001, the inaugural Cesar Balan Golf Cup was introduced, exemplifying the symbiotic relationship with Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Past President Lorna Lao spearheaded the first Banker's Badminton Tournament and advanced collaboration with security forces for enhanced safety measures.

The dynamic leadership of President Jason T. Ang in 2004 paved the way for innovative events, such as the cheer dance competition and economic forums featuring industry luminaries. DCBAI's perseverance and unity remained unwavering, fostering a harmonious community within the ever-evolving banking landscape.

A Lasting Legacy

Despite the vicissitudes of the financial landscape, Davao City Bankers Association Inc. remains steadfast in its purpose and vision. Through unity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to its founding principles, the association will continue to thrive, making its resounding voice heard as a driving force in the banking sector.
